Becky sat on Mickey's couch. The binder was in front of her, and it felt as if she needed a very large glass of wine for her to deal with it.
"So, what is this?" Mickey was seated next to her staring at the serious black binder. Becky pushed her hair from her eyes, tied it into a ponytail, and exhaled.
"Everything I need to know about the election," Becky answered.
"How did you get that?"
"I found it," Becky said seriously. Mickey was making dinner. She was glad she had someone to do that. Mickey nodded and got up to attend to her stove.
"What does it say?" Mickey called.
"I'm too scared to open it." She was too scared to open it, which seemed very dumb. She just didn't know what to expect, but she knew that she should not be afraid of a few pages of paper.
Although, it was definitely more than a few.
The binder was full, stuffed with maybe two hundred pieces of paper.
She lifted the cover. She was greeted by a blank page that read ELECTION in a serious black font.
"What are you hoping to find?" Mickey asked.
"Answers," Becky called. She turned to watch Mickey at the stove. Mickey's house was an open concept, when meant there was no wall between the living room and the kitchen.
"Do you think you'll get all that from a binder?" Mickey asked.
"I hope so."
"Are you being purposely elusive?" Mickey asked. Becky eased into a grin.
"Yes I am." Mickey rolled her eyes and pulled two plates from the cabinet behind her.
"Being a detective in this town really has changed you for the more annoying," Mickey said.
"I know," Becky said. "I can't seem to help it." She turned back to the binder. Next to her was her laptop, with the archive of Patrick Turner's stories from the election two years ago.
She was going to cross reference to see what he had written aboutâsee what he was talking to people about.
The first item was an interview with James Smith when he was running for mayor. She read through the interview. It felt pretty standard.
She was realizing that the majority of this would be standard stuff. He had transcribed every word of every interview he had ever done, and they were pages long.
She kept flipping, trying to find something of value.
"Have you found anything interesting yet?" Mickey asked. She set two steaming plates on the coffee table in front of Becky, who put aside the binder and picked up the plate, placing her feet underneath her.
"Nothing," Becky said with a sigh. "How long has it been?"
"Twenty-two minutes," Mickey said seriously. Becky wrinkled her nose. It felt so much longer than that.
Mickey stared at the binder that Becky had put aside. She had begun to rifle through the things that seemed ordinary, but that had brought her to almost the back of the binder.
She had found nothing of use.
"I should go through it again. And I should get off your couch," Becky said.
"Stay as long as you want." Becky put her plate down and picked up the binder again.
