CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

A Little Warning

The miner was back. Initially, I liked the guy, I was conflicted about it, but I liked him. On the one had, he murdered a bunch of his friends after running from the military. On the other hand, he killed them inside my domain, so I gained from it. I don't exactly have a high ground to stand on when it comes to murder. Sure, he was making my plans to hide harder, but he was the spark for my Fairyland plan (trademark pending!), so I let it go.

But now he was starting to get onto my bad side.

Some of my annoyance had to do with him making my Fairyland plan harder. Someone had to start using it and letting people know about it, so the fact he brought people to see it was good. Sadly, the people he brought were the local representatives of the funny hat society. It's not clear which god these people worshiped, but that they were professional religion men was pretty clear. Funny hats, arrogant behavior, servants doing all the work, weird clothes, religious symbols. Yup. [Priests].

I might be slightly annoyed with the gods, and that might be coloring my views here. Maybe.

Alright, almost certainly.

While the lion-lizards have been ignoring my dungeon, so I should have been more attentive, I still missed the arrival of the religious squad. I was focused on smoothing out the dimensional disturbances during the day and expanding the space in the Spire at night. The first I knew about them was when they stepped through my Fairyland door. They sent in first a small group of armed men. It looked like they were the guards for the outing. I wasn't worried about the group tromping around Fairyland; the point of it was to provide a distraction. The real concern I had was what the miner had said or done that had got this kind of response. How would you get this many people moving at once?

Three wagons loaded with gear, multiple men with different holy symbols, obviously differing outfits and lines of command. It was a bit of a religious cluster, and it was reasonably entertaining watching the three hat-wearing guys -and one hat-wearing lady- try and direct things without outright claiming they were in charge. I was a part of more than one dysfunctional web project that looked like this group. I was never in charge, I was always just one of the artists, but there was usually someone who jockeyed themselves into power. Oddly enough, it was when more than one person was trying to be the big dog, but there was no real winner, that the project had serious issues.

The old guy didn't seem to be seeking anyone's approval. He just instructed the servants to do what was needed, and they did it. My money was on the old guy for the final leadership position. While the other [Priests] were directing the placement of tents and cooking equipment, subtly trying to imply their importance through deployment, the old guy was sending the miner into Fairyland following the guards.
