CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR

My pulse races and hands tremble as I read The Travelers and the Five Mirrors aloud: “Once upon a time, there were five friends. They each hailed from one of the five great kingdoms: Ailse of Tswangohin, Evander of Fracilonia, Mairead of Schasumetsats, Olvir of Roladif, and Theodosius of Skaans. Each of them was blessed by the gods with the gift of traveling. Individually, they were incredibly powerful. When they worked together, they grew their gifts to strengths never before seen.

“Over the centuries, the friends began to wish for others to be able to travel throughout the five lands as freely as they did, without fear of the long and often dangerous journeys between them. They dreamed of seeing their kingdoms united after thousands of years of separation. Combining their magic, they forged five mirrors, through which others without traveling abilities could move between the kingdoms.

“Each kingdom received one as a gift from the Travelers. In return, the kings of each land granted protection to the Travelers to ensure their safety and the safety of the mirrors. The people of the kingdoms rejoiced, using the mirrors to see the other kingdoms, trade goods, and form the grand continent, Carimea, with the capital in Skaans City.”

There are pages torn and missing. I pause and look up in confusion at Amaleana, who shrugs. I run my finger down the torn edges in the middle of the book and continue, “After the war, the use of the mirrors was banned.” Another torn page. “The end.”

“So is that it? Is that the mirror you fell through?” Amaleana turns back to the first page of the book, points at the haunting image of the mirror, and looks back at me.

It is. Undeniably. Disbelief washes over me as I stare blankly at the page. Why is it written in a children's book? Why are there pages missing? Why don’t Novalora or Embryanna know about this book? How did the mirror end up on Earth?

I don’t know enough about Carimea to know where to start. Surely, someone should have some memory of the Travelers. My head aches from all the questions. “Yes, it is. But what’s on those other pages? Do you remember?”

Her eyes fill with slight sorrow. “No. They have never been there as long as I can remember. During the revolution, books were censored by the previous monarchy in an effort to keep things from the people. It is also a very old book, so the pages may have been torn by one of the children in my family. I always thought it was only a children’s story, until you described the mirror. This story is not in any of the history books I have read. So, if it is real and was censored, it has been that way for a very long time. Before the revolution, possibly before the previous ruling family took the crown, many centuries ago.”

I take her hands. “We need to show Silas. Can you bring me to him? I saw Brynne heading to him in the west wing.
