Part Two: Barquea

Chapter eighteen

Anders had, rather shamelessly, gawked at the city of Lo’usa Tet, where the Sula of Barquea kept his grand palace. Farad had been prepared for the man to have a rather humble dwelling, compared to the trappings of King Matheus, who had a grand castle, indeed.

Anders, the boy portion of himself, hadn’t truly expected anything at all. Perhaps a different sort of castle, with a high wall and some gardens, since the world was both warm and humid in a way that plants seemed to enjoy. Many of them seemed to grow in the area, at least.

Instead the Sula, Darian, lived in what seemed to be a small enclosed city. The palace building itself was large in both breadth and height, and its white walls and curious spiral rooves glinted in the sun. The top pieces were like metal and bright paint, in blues, oranges, reds and purples. There was one lone green tower topped in such a fashion as well, in the distance. Around the walled compound was a thing which seemed to be a grand market, which was vast, compared to what he’d seen at any point in either of his lives. Anders realized he honestly couldn’t tell just how large the whole thing was. Several miles across, with a palace in the middle that had to have been ten times, or more, larger than the castle of King Matheus.

Five of the wagons with them had been filled with food at the border of Devos and sent off directly to travel to the area that needed it most. Not knowing if it would work at all, Anders had left a purse of coins with the lead driver, asking him to get what he could and make more trips to the correct areas. That had been done, more or less, in secret. A full quarter of the remaining funds he had, from Mad Marta’s treasure, went to that purpose.

Keeping the rest was weighing on his mind, as he looked at the marketplace in the distance. After all, he didn’t need much, as far as things and trinkets went. Perhaps a few odd things to take back with him on the return voyage, to give as gifts. That was a thing that he’d heard of, occasionally. Not that he’d ever been the recipient of such a thing.

Five carriages, all of them having been tidied by their drivers earlier that day, drove up to the front gate at the palace. He thought that was the case, but there was a vast interior courtyard, which took them nearly half an hour to traverse. They were going slow, in a stately fashion, but it gave him time to look out the window at the gardens there. Those were very different, in several places. There were, of course, the normal things he would have expected. Flowers and trees that gave off pleasant scents. There was also a stretch of wooden frames, making what could have been a covered area, with hanging boxes in it, each filled with plants of various sorts.
