New Year on the hill was a relaxing and peaceful affair. It was the first time that Kerrie and Mike had met Buddy, and Kerrie was smitten by Ange’s red dog.

‘He’s so beautiful, Ange. Can I borrow him for a media shoot sometime?’ asked Kerrie.

‘Sure, he seems to like you. Can you use a media name when you refer to him in any posts? I wouldn’t want him responding to your multitude of followers should they call out his name. Hopefully, he might ignore his media alias. Use Rusty, which is the name my dad will use for Buddy’s replacement,’ suggested Ange.

Gus’s friends Harry and Anna were lovely, and Ange learnt about the breakneck speed of merchant banking, not to mention the trouble Harry and Gus had gotten up to during their time at boarding school. A life as a merchant banker seemed far more ruthless and demanding than Ange’s. Harry even had to break from dinner and take a call on some deal that was in the wind. It was New Year’s Eve, for goodness’ sake. Anna worked as a dermatologist on Sydney’s North Shore—talk about a power couple. She was particularly interested once Kerrie blurted out that Ange had recently gotten herself shot. Anna was keen to see the effects, never having seen an actual gunshot wound before. Kerrie stuck her nose into the gunshot viewing, expressing her hope that it didn’t happen again in the year about to start. Ange had formed a similar view.

Even when seen from afar, the fireworks over Byron Bay were a fitting end to the fireworks of Ange’s year. Some of those fireworks had been terrible and literally involved people firing things; others had been terrific, notably the fireworks of her romance with Gus. Although their relationship had been a slow and steady burn, it had ultimately exploded, which was much to Kerrie’s relief and a testament to her skills as a schemer. The Byron Bay fireworks display would be nowhere as spectacular as the waterfall of light that cascaded from the Sydney Harbour Bridge each year, reflected off the harbour and the Opera House. However, Ange figured she wouldn’t change places for any money.

New Year’s Day itself saw Ange and Gus find an almost deserted beach break for a surf. Now a veteran, Buddy seemed to understand what was going on. Ange had picked out an old towel that was now Buddy’s beach towel, and he sat peacefully under a large pandanus palm and took a nap, keeping one eye half-open to guard their gear against opportunistic passers-by.

Even after her gentle and relaxing surf, enjoyed with her new partner, Ange was still seething with anger over what had happened to the young Vietnamese woman. Despite this simmering fury, she held herself in check for the last of the holidays, sensing that she was perhaps standing on the edge of a steep, slippery slide—destination unknown.
