Chapter Five
The closet hugged every edge of Harper's clothes and body. It seemed to be one of the tiny hall closets that Andrew hadnât searched yet. Harper shoved into the closet against her will, feeling like she was being pinched. If hiding under the bed was claustrophobic, this closet was downright suffocating. It was sucking all the air from Harper's lungs, forcing her to breathe through her mouth.
She had no idea what was even in this closet. Towels? Blankets? Toilet paper? It didn't matter. There was no room to breathe in here due to the built-in shelves. It smelled musty and old, which is where Harper's theory of it being a linen closet came from. Breathing out of her mouth was getting old fast, but she didn't see herself with much of another choice. She was stuck.
So instead of focusing on the terrible hiding place she had decided to pick out for herself, she looked through the slits of the closet doors. When she decided to shove herself into the closet, she hadn't realized the doors had slits. She hadn't understood it gave her a great vantage point of everything going on in front of her, since the closet was facing the basement, the things she could only hear and not see.
She couldn't reach her phone without disturbing the towels or blankets. Jill would want to know what was happening and nag Harper until she got what she wanted from her.
Andrew was slowly climbing up the stairs in an incredibly annoying fashion. He was taking his sweet time, watching the girls in the basement with each step he took to reach the living room where Harper had thrown her bottle. It was a weird sensation, watching Andrew now that she knew what he could do, and she was almost sickened from the sight of him now.
He wore a white tank top, and his pants were still the black cargo standard issue police pants. His shoes were the same, but he had tossed his police garments from the top of his body the second he got home. For whatever reason, this irritated Harper.
When he finally reached the top of the basement stairs, Harper craned her neck to see if she could get a glimpse of Beth. She was desperate to see more of her than she had already seen. Was she covered in bruises? Was she healthy?
Did she look like the Beth that Harper had known from what felt like so long ago?
Harper knew it was stupid to wish for such a thing. Her best friend had been through a hell that no one should ever have to experience. There would be differences. Harper was an experienced cop - she knew that she should know better. Beth might have had hollowed cheeks. Darker eyes. An air of seriousness and maturity about her that wasn't there when they were kidsâthe aura of someone who had their innocence stolen, taken away.
Harper didn't want to think about Andrew taking that from her.
She tried to
