Chapter 10 â Sleep
Two hours later, after answering countless questions from both the Metropolitan Royal Thai Police and the military police about the attempted kidnapping, we finally dragged ourselves into the bungalow in the compound, and almost fell into bed. Lisa shuffled in with us, and flopped onto us, her yawn huge as she muttered, âCuddle puddle.â
I didn't protest because my exhaustion was back with a vengeance since I came down off the adrenaline high of all the excitement of the attempt. And we were paying homage to whatever gods of sleep there may be as we dozed off in moments. I was cursed to only get these short spurts of sleep forever now, wasn't I?
That sleep was fitful as I dreamed of what had just happened in the streets of Bangkok. We heard the commotion outside and there was the sound of someone slapping the limo twice. This signaled Ivan as he said to us in a serious tone that was all business, âLadies, follow, quickly. Do as I say and keep down behind me.â
He opened the door and slipped out as the heat of the afternoon swirled in, and I saw just how formidable my security detail was. The moment he stood to scan the area, a man who must have jumped off another vehicle was diving into him from above. The Russian didn't even flinch as he caught the man mid-leap by the throat with his free hand, dangling the now choking man off the ground as he swept the area with his gun before slamming the man to the ground with bone-jarring force.
âNow. Keep down.â He beckoned us, my heart pounding as we slipped outside, now able to see that there were a dozen or so men and women who were running in from all directions, all armed with what looked like clubs. Pietor was throwing one woman he was holding over his head, into two oncoming men.
They went down in a tangle of arms and legs. Then he swung his gun toward another who was running up behind him, causing the much smaller Thai Sapien to slide to a stop, panic on his face as his wide eyes were glued on the weapon that could end him in an instant. The club tumbled from his fingers as Pietor's grip tightened as he started to pull the trigger.
I blurted out, âNo! No killing!â And the big man glanced my way then huffed out in exasperation and instead spun, his leg lashing out in a spinning kick to the attacker's gut that had the dark-haired man flying back with such force, his legs hit a squat, roundish fire hydrant so violently I could hear bones snap and causing the man to whip downwards into the pavement without so much as a gasp it happened so fast, leaving the unconscious man slumped in a heap on the ground.
Then we were running, following Ivan as he cleared a path for us, throwing the aggressors around like rag dolls. In
