…and going low

In March of 2011, Syn owned up to Lux that she was getting paid for sex work. It was, Lux remembers, on the night bus on their way home. Syn had left UCL and it was freezing; and at the time, it had not occurred to Lux that without college Syn had no money coming in for rent. Or that without rent she would have to leave London. In the eyes of Syn, who was in all things essentially a creature of logic, the solution was simple.

She enjoyed sex, greatly. She could earn as much as £850 a night through sex work; and she needed the money. Sex work may not have been her ideal solution, but the answer was obvious. And once begun, there was a compelling logic to continuing. Lux and Syn both had expensive make-up and shoe habits. Both enjoyed a wide range of recreational drugs, and sex helped pay for all of these.

In time, too, Syn would start to take hormones. Later still, she would embark on a seriously expensive surgical journey, re-shaping her body to her own very high standards. For that, too, sex would pay: indeed, would have to pay because short of winning the lottery or landing a high-paid job in the City, there was little that came close to fitting the bill.

As Syn put it later: ‘I am adequately (intensely to say the least) passionate about changing my gender that I have decided to be brave and become a sex-worker where I have been able to fund my surgeries which will allow me to live happily as a woman.’
