To better understand the potential pain and disconnect for Muslim Americans doing something like a “Meet a Muslim” event, please take the time to read the Washington Post article “Love Thy Neighbor?” by Stephanie McCrummen published July 1 and available by searching http://www.washingtonpost.com. The subtitle of the article is “When a Muslim doctor arrived in a rural Midwestern town, ‘it felt right.’ But that feeling began to change after the election of Donald Trump.” See if your community has an interfaith council. If not, bring together folks yourself! Many councils have started because people from a mosque, synagogue and church decided to share meals together and learn about each other’s spiritual lives and cultures.

If you would like to engage in a support system so you are prepared to act in case a mosque or synagogue or church is attacked in your community, here are a couple of resources to bring to your planning meeting with a diverse group of community and faith leaders to create a Safety Plan:

Protecting Houses of Worship Event Resource Guide: ise.gov/resources/document-library/protecting-houses-worship-event-resource-guide.

Resources to protect your house of worship: fema.gov/faith-resources.

Recommended best practices for securing houses of worship, provided by ASIS security: sacramentointerfaith.org, search “ASIS best practices.”
