Four Shamanic Journeys

with Guided Imagery

Michael Samuels

Close your eyes. Take several deep breaths and let yourself relax. Let your abdomen rise as you breathe in and fall as you breathe out. Now let yourself open to what is around you. Invite any spirit guides, spirit animals, angels, ancestors, and energies that heal you and keep you well to come to you. Let them come to you and be with you. You don’t have to see them, just know that they are there with you always when you go into this guided imagery space.

As you rest in this space with your helpers around you, protecting you and keeping you safe, enter these four guided imagery experiences. Try not to analyze, judge, or understand them in words. Just feel and experience them.

IMAGERY INVITATION:

BEAR DANCE CEREMONY

It is after midnight. You are in the high desert of California on sacred Native American land. You are at a bear dance to heal people who are ill, to heal community and the earth. You are sitting on a chair, and in front of you is a large circle of stones. Inside the circle is a huge fire, drummers, and dancing bears. You can see the shadows of the bears as they move around the fire. See how the bears dance: they growl, step high, sometimes stand and raise their paws to the stars. Know that these spirit bears can move up and down the levels in the sky, making new cells, finding spirits that need to leave, taking them out, and adding in their bear energy. The bears circle over and over again. See, hear, and feel the ancient drumbeat and the songs of bears, men with eagle wings, and mother earth and father sky. Now see people coming into the circle to be healed. There can be many of them, 20 to 50. Know that they have cancer, chronic pain, arthritis, life crises, drug addiction, grieving for loss, any problem or disease. They come from as far away as Mexico and are of many tribes. Some are not Native Americans—there were many invited to come to this sacred healing bear dance. Know that the bears do not know the names of their ailments. They do not ask. See the bears go up to each person who offered tobacco to the leader for a healing. See the bears go around each person, maybe sniffing them, maybe looking in their eyes. Suddenly you see a bear go right up to someone. He growls, whacks them with a paw, not gently, and then he goes to the huge fire and throws up and then goes back to the people again, taking out what needs to be taken out, facilitating release of what needs to leave. Then in peace he may put his huge paw on them and let come in what needs to enter. Slowly as in a dream you can see the bears buzzing with energy as they fill up what was empty in each person.
