CHAPTER SIX

4 Mietali, 6960 R.T.

After persuading Cienala to take over for a while, Muhanir wrote a note, folded it over, and stepped out to wander through the streets of Nuavel. He did not wish to attract the attention of the loyalist militia, which seemed to be on heightened alert, so he sat down on a nearby bench and began to read the copy of The Imperial Standard that he had brought along with him.

What is this filth? he wondered.

Much like the other propaganda outlets of the regime, the Standard was more fiction than fact. They boasted about the death of General Escoreth, but that was just about all that could be expected from them in the realm of factual information. Most of the rest of the articles were solely constructed to demonize the patriots as mindless brutes who slaughtered children and raped women.

Once the latest patrol passed him by, Muhanir rose, folded the paper under his arm, and made his way to the center of town. Once there, he stood in front of that little coffee shop, wondering how he should handle the emotions of the female who waited for him within. He could not approach her directly for fear of arousing suspicion, so he came up with the next best thing.

“Rebels on the run! Read all about it!”

“Would you like to buy a paper, sir?” the boy asked.

“I need your help with something,” Muhanir replied.

“What?”

Muhanir turned and pointed at the coffee shop.

“Do you see Jalvarin there?”

“Yes.”

“There should be a female human with black hair in there. She is a little bit shorter than I am and should be drinking coffee by herself. I will give you five foals if you deliver this note to her.”

Muhanir held up the note that he had written for her.

“Nine.”

“Nine?!”

Muhanir barely held back a smile. Deep down, he begrudgingly respected the young elf for his hustling ways.

“Make it seven, and you have yourself a deal,” he said.

“Deal,” the boy replied.

Muhanir and the boy shook hands. In a matter of moments, the boy had set his papers down in the grass, crossed the street, scampered inside the coffee shop, and re-emerged without the note. After letting a horse and buggy pass on the street, he returned to Muhanir.

“Was she the one who seemed to be up in the clouds?” he asked.

“That does sound like her,” Muhanir pulled out his coin purse.

“Then I have done as you have asked.”

The boy held out his hands. Muhanir drew some foals out of his coin purse, counted out seven, and dumped them into the hands of the young one. Just as the boy pocketed the money, picked up his papers, and walked away, Ailia emerged from the coffee shop and locked eyes with Muhanir.

She did not want to attract attention, so she simply looked upon her paramour with adoration and lust. In response,
