TRUE HOLINESS
Rolland Baker
âSince we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God.â
â2 CORINTHIANS 7:1
SESSION SUMMARY
God has a message for the world, and He wants to convey that message through us, the Church. His message centers on Jesus Christ and the love and joy that Jesus embodies. When we are able to understand and participate in the Christian life with true love and joy, we are well equipped to carry out the Great Commission. When we are joyful about who God is and what He has done for us and when we love like Jesus loves, our hearts are equipped to be the kind of holy and set-apart people God wants in the world. The world sees God through us as we embody His holy character. As we go out, genuinely full of the joy and love of heaven, others are able to recognize the authenticity they hunger for and can more easily embrace what God so generously gives.
One aspect of the authentic Christian life is learning to live with freedom in the Spirit. Manifestations of the Spirit are surprising and disturbing to some, but they are nothing new. They can be found throughout the history of the Church. We need to become comfortable with the manifestations that come with Godâs presence if we are to swim in the mighty river of God that brings the revival the world desperately needs.
Authentic Christian missions training begins with the task of preparing our inner self first as a firm foundation for the ânuts and boltsâ of missiology that are to follow. We must allow God to conform our inner person through the process of consecration. This inner transformation is possible because Godâs Spirit will give us the desire, willingness, and power to set our life apart and dedicate it to Him. We must do the hard work of inner preparation lest we fall into the trap of trying to build a foundation on a combination of our carnal nature and Godâs divine nature. This kind of a foundation will not withstand the storms of the enemy. We must earnestly pursue the person of Jesus Christ, who is Holiness, until His holiness overtakes our sinfulness and transforms us into a people ready to do His will.
