Chapter Three

Better Than Nothing

Commanders’ training was not what I expected. We formed into a squad and each took a turn making commands to the squad. Our task was to get through the module without anyone dying. Nick failed miserably when it was my turn to lead. He refused to do anything I said.

“What the hell, Nick?” Dimitri snapped in the middle of the module. I had never seen Dimitri angry before. “How hard is it to follow a simple command?” The others pointed their weapons to the ground and the module ended.

“What seems to be the problem,” War Advisor Jennings said over the loudspeaker. All the commanders pointed at Nick. “Taylor, what’s the problem?”

“I just don’t think a female should be in command, sir,” he shouted up to the watching room.

“Is that so?” War Advisor Jennings asked.

“Yes, sir,” Nick shouted.

“Armistice, how do you feel about the matter?”

“I believe that Commander Taylor needs his diaper changed, sir!” I shouted as loud as I could. The room filled with laughter to include War Advisor Jennings. Nick glared and stepped towards me. Dimitri stepped between us.

“Not today, my friend,” Dimitri warned.

“Taking her side over mine?”

“I do not agree with how you are acting. Keep your personal problems out of here.”

“You can have her,” Nick said to Eric. “She doesn’t put out anyway.” Eric began to grab Nick but Bruce pulled him back. Nick stormed out of the room.

I stood there mortified. I wanted to run out the other door and hide my face. I never expected Nick to be so childish and say something like that about me.

I took a deep breath. This was not the place to cry. The past few days had been a nightmare and Nick had just added insult to injury. Why had I been so stupid to fall for his lies? Now I had to turn around and face my peers after his outburst.

“Don’t feel bad, Kaitlyn, I didn’t put out to him either,” Jordan finally said. I turned around and he was grinning. Everyone broke out into laughter.

“Thanks,” I said and he winked.

“We’ll call it a day,” War Advisor Jennings announced.

We all went and put up our weapons. Nick was sitting in front of the Guardian Gate. I didn’t even look in his direction. No one spoke to him. We all handed in our weapons and began walking off.

“Kaitlyn,” Nick said. I stopped and looked at him. “Can we talk for a minute?”

“Nothing to talk about, Nick,” I snapped at him. He stood up and walked over to me. Eric stopped talking to Jordan and walked over to me.

“Relax, Eric, I’m not going to say anything rude to my sloppy seconds,” Nick snarled.

Orion pulled me back, right as Eric punched Nick in the face. All hell broke loose. The other commanders didn’t even attempt to break up the fight.

“You guys. Please,” I begged, pleading with the other commanders to step in.

“They’ve been feuding for years, Kaitlyn,” Bruce said standing next to me.

Eric and Nick were still going at it.
