Chapter Fourteen

Mr. Irvine noticed it at the same time and he inhaled sharply. “What the hell? Who is that?”

The body was facedown, a bit bent as if the woman had fallen headfirst from the bed. A dark patch in the carpet around her head indicated that a lot of blood had come out of her.

Long blond locks obscured the face, but I had a fair notion of her identity. I had to swallow a couple of times so as not to throw up before I could answer.

“I think it’s April Jeffery.”

“Fuck.”

“Yeah…”

My mind was blank and I didn’t know what to think. Even though I knew Ferguson was capable of violence, I hadn’t thought he would be a killer.

“I have to call Mr. Moreira,” Irvine stated.

“And the cops. The faster they put an APB out on Ferguson, the quicker he’ll be caught.”

“I think the boss would like to handle this discreetly.”

Of course he would.

“This is a murder connected with a case already under investigation by the police. Discretion is impossible,” I said dryly. Then I sighed. “But my brother is at one of the restaurants downstairs. He’s a homicide detective at the 70th. He can take a look before the entire show lands here.”

Irvine looked relieved as he took out his phone. “You call him. I’ll call the boss.”

“Ask him to bring my boss too.”

Trevor took his time to answer. “What now?”

“Do you remember how I said I wanted to see where Ferguson would lead me?”

“Yes…?”

“You’ll never guess what I found at the other end.”

“Please don’t say a dead body, please don’t say a dead body…” he muttered.

“It’s a dead body!” I declared like he’d won on The Price is Right. “Can you come to room 404? And bring Tessa too.”

I could hear his sigh even after hanging up.

“Could you get disposable gloves for the detective?” I asked Irvine, who sent the security guy to the nearest cleaning supply closet for them. “And we’ll need to secure the perimeter until the cops come.”

For that end, we retired to the hallway. It gave us a perfect view of four people approaching a moment later, Jackson and Moreira from the farther end of the long hallway, Trevor and Tessa from the closer one. They paused in front of us, and Trevor and Moreira sized each other up. I had a notion that Trevor would welcome a chance to arrest Moreira for the merest provocation.

“Thanks for coming so fast,” I said to my brother. Jackson wrapped an arm around me. I leaned against him, glad that he was here. If he wondered how I’d ended up here, he didn’t show it.

“I’m sorry I ruined your date.”

Trevor sighed. “It’s not like it was going well anyway…”

Tessa gave him a baffled look, but didn’t contradict him.

“This is Mr. Irvine, the head of security here,” I introduced the man. “These are my siblings, Dr. Theresa Hayes and Detective Trevor Hayes.”

“You have an accomplished family.”

I definitely agreed with him. Moreira was eyeing Tessa with the same appreciation he’d shown for the Italian food at lunch.
