When the kids reconvened at Snoops HQ after dinner, Hayden was alive with energy. “Guys!” she shouted. “Check it out.”

She had her tablet open to the School Ties website. More specifically, to the page for Watson Middle School. She pointed at a small comment in a thread about the basketball game, and Carlos read it aloud.

“That Fleischman team’s going to freak out when they see what we’re doing,” Carlos read.

“Oh, man,” Jaden said. “I knew Frankie was too nice to dognap Champ. It has to be Watson. They must be talking about stealing our mascot.”

Carlos saw Keisha roll her eyes. Poor Jaden had a huge crush on Frankie, despite her complete lack of charm.

“Let’s not get ahead of ourselves,” Carlos said. “But yeah, it sounds like we can officially add Watson to the list of suspects.”

Agatha leaped up on the desk, as if to see what the Snoops were up to. She meowed softly and snuggled up against Hayden, sniffing and licking her hands.

“She must smell the animals from the pet store,” Hayden said. To Agatha, she added, “Don’t worry, sweetie. I’d never replace you.”

“Oh, here. I brought her some food,” Carlos said. He handed Hayden a small plastic bag. Inside, wrapped in crinkly white paper, was part of a salmon fish filet from Diaz Groceries.

Agatha’s ears perked up even more when she smelled the fish and saw Hayden unwrapping it. Hayden placed the fish on a plate and had barely set it on the cement floor before Agatha began chowing down.

Hayden sat cross-legged on the floor beside her. “All those poor stray animals like Agatha,” she said.

“With no one to feed them and keep track of them,” Keisha said.

Hayden suddenly sat up straight. “That’s it!” she belted out, startling the other three Snoops. Jaden nearly dropped his can of root beer.

“What’s it?” Jaden asked.

Hayden scrambled to her feet and grabbed her backpack. “I need my tablet and I need to talk to Polly,” she said.

“Okay,” Carlos said, giving up the chair behind the desk for Hayden to sit.

“Oh!” Hayden added as she plopped down. “And I need a grape sucker.”
