When an entry of interest is found, the Testamentary Card Index should then be consulted (see below).

NAI Testamentary Card Index

Having identified an entry from one of the above indexes, the Testamentary Card Index in the NAI should be consulted to establish if a particular Will or Administration survived. This index covers all surviving pre and post 1858 testamentary material (except the surviving post 1858 probate district Will books). Betham’s abstracts and other abstract collections are indexed separately from the main testamentary card index.

Irish Wills from 1903

Some brief references have been given to the fire in the Custom House, Dublin, in 1922, when much material of genealogical value was destroyed. However, it should be remembered that Wills and Administrations were not placed in the public domain (i.e. in the Public Record office / NAI) until 20 years after they were made. So although the perception may be that all Wills and Administrations were destroyed in 1922 that is not the case. Wills and Administrations from 1903 are available in the NAI.

Other Collections and Indexes

Registry of Deeds

A sizeable number of deeds were registered in the Registry of Deeds in Dublin. Abstracts of Wills registered there during the period 1708 to 1842 have been published in three volumes as follows:

Volume 1 1708 – 1745 ed. P.B. Eustace, (Dublin) 1954

Volume 2 1746 – 1785 ed. P.B. Eustace, (Dublin) 1956

Volume 3 1785 – 1832 ed. P.B. Eustace & E. Ellis (Dublin) 1984

Genealogical Office

This office holds a sizeable collection of pre-1900 Irish Wills and abstracts. ‘An Index of Will Abstracts in the Genealogical Office, Dublin’ compiled by P.B.Eustace was included in the Irish Manuscripts Commission’s publication, ‘The Genealogical Office, Dublin’ (Dublin) 1998. pp.79 – 282. The index was also published in Analecta Hibernica Vol.17, pp.151 – 348.

Land Commission

An index to the Wills held by the Land Commission is available in the NLI. See Chapter 8.

Copies and Abstracts of Irish Wills

A ‘Guide to Copies and Abstracts of Irish Wills’ by the Rev. Wallace Clare (Sharman 1930) is a valuable aid to the researcher, as it provides a single alphabetical index to the following collections:

Copies and abstracts of Irish Wills deposited in the SOG

Copies of Wills in all the Prerogative Will books which were salvaged from the PRO fire.

Early original Wills deposited in English archives.

Copies and abstracts of Wills published in some historical and genealogical journals, family histories etc.
