Chapter 8

Although Lorne and Sean turned up at the hospital, Katy insisted there was no point in them being there as the doctor was busy carrying out a bunch of tests on poor little Georgina. Therefore, they left with heavy hearts after an hour and returned to the station. Walking into the incident room, Lorne was surprised when Sean joined her instead of going straight to his own office.

“Coffee?” he asked.

“Thanks, white with one sugar.”

He crossed the room to the vending machine and returned carrying two cups. She smiled when he placed one cup on the desk beside her. “Gather around, guys, if you will.”

The team pulled their chairs around to face Lorne and Sean who were standing close together next to the whiteboard.

“Right, as you know, Katy has had to rush off to attend to an emergency. We dropped by the hospital to see how things were, but she told us not to hang around. There’s no news on how little Georgina is yet. We’re hoping to hear something very soon. In the meantime, I think we should remain focused on the cases we’re dealing with.” She then went on to bring the team up to date on how the conversation had gone with Wendy’s mother. “I’ve taken Wendy’s phone to the lab in the hope they can trace where the text message came from. Before handing it over, I took a look at her Facebook page and in particular her messages. Over recent months, Wendy had received some pretty intense, downright wicked messages from both male and female profiles. Now, I’m guessing these profiles were made up, but just in case they weren’t, Karen, I need you to get on to the powers that be at Facebook, make them aware of the situation and tell them we need access to those people’s ISP addresses, or better still, their home addresses if the accounts are genuine.”

Karen shrugged. “I’ll try my best, boss. You know how damn stubborn Facebook can be, though.”

“I know. Emphasise the importance behind your call from the outset, if you would?”

“Will do.” Karen scribbled down her instructions in her notebook.

“Okay, I’m not sure what other social media sites Wendy used. Graham, can you do some digging there for me? We need to see what else was going on that could have tipped her over the edge apart from the bloody obvious.”

“I’m going to leave you to it for a while,” Sean announced.

Lorne nodded, and he left the room.

She couldn’t help letting out a relieved sigh after he’d gone. The puzzled expressions from her team didn’t go unnoticed, however, but she decided to press on rather than divulge what was bugging her superior.

“Okay, let’s keep digging. Katy and I were due out on surveillance after the school chucks out today. That’s out of the window now. Graham and Pat, do you want to cover that for me again?” Both men nodded. “Great, I’ll be in my office if you need me.” As soon as she flopped into her seat, Lorne placed a call to Mrs Lowe about something that was playing on her mind.
