“My daughter’s a brat.” Nick pushed the door to the dishwasher closed and flipped the latch.

“She’s adorable.” Dana dropped the dishtowel onto the island and whirled around. “Oh, Nick. I love her already. She’s full of life and sass and totally adores you.”

After the disastrous meeting with Toddy followed by April’s revelation, tonight’s dinner—especially the exchange between Megan and Nick about the future—lifted her spirits more than she’d hoped. A sudden panic filled her. “What if Megan was teasing about living here? What if she—”

“Don’t borrow trouble. Megan says what she thinks. Sometimes she’s blunt and uncensored, but honest.”

“Like her dad?”

A half-shrug admitted the resemblance as he trailed a fingertip along her arm. “From the moment you and I met, it’s been zero to sixty.”

Dana smiled. The description perfectly matched their whirlwind courtship. “I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

His gaze shifted to something serious, and Dana caught her breath. Was he going to ask her? Here and now?

The chug of the dishwasher and the lingering hint of seafood took the place of sweet violins and roses. Pendant lights suspended over the kitchen island fell short of the ambiance that candlelight would have provided. But the situation couldn’t have been more romantic. Couldn’t have been more real.

Nick caught her hand and held it to his chest. The beat of his heart and the warmth of his body forged a commitment of its own. His tobacco-brown gaze held her captive.

“Marry me?”

Blunt and unvarnished. No artifice or pretense. After all the lies and hidden truths that had plagued her past, she savored the simple words, straight from his heart. His name passed her lips in a gentle sigh as she cupped his face. That strong, handsome, honest face.

“You give good proposal, Mr. Warden.” She lifted on tiptoe and pressed a kiss to his mouth. “And that’s a definite yes.”

The seductive murmur drew a chuckle from Nick, a wicked gleam in his gaze. “I aim to please, Ms. Canfield.”

“In that case…” Deep breath. Go for it, Dana. “Move in with me? You and Megan?”

One corner of his mouth lifted. “No place else I’d rather be.”

He said yes! The only question left to ask was…

“When?”

He shifted into a hip-shot stance, reminding her of the first time she’d seen him. Standing outside his garage, leaning against the building, coffee cup in one hand. The other hand had gone to his chest, playing out a heartbeat. At the time, she’d thought the gesture was aimed at her BMW convertible. But it hadn’t been.

His heart had been beating for her even before they’d met.

“How about late summer, early fall? With your projects and relocating the garage, the next couple months are going to be busy.”

“That could work for the wedding.” She paced from the island to the stove and back. “For the move, why wait? Pack the essentials, you could move in tomorrow. Then—”

“Whoa, honey. We have some planning to do there too.”

Her spirits dropped and immediately she scolded herself. Talk about being a brat. She was the one who wanted everything.
