I HURRIED TO DROP OFF Spicy and pick up Noodle before my appointment with the contractor back at my store. Sophie was thrilled to come along, and I assured her again and again that I needed her there. It wasn’t just her eye for design; I also needed her bubbly personality and chattiness to keep my mind off Hank and Saundra

The contractor was a man named Jack. He looked like I pictured he would on the phone - grizzly, tough, devoted to getting the work done right and on time. He had a thick gray beard and a ruler tucked into his toolbelt. Noodle was cautiously optimistic that Jack would like him.

“I’m sorry I’m late!” Sophie cried as she hopped out of her car across the street. “Homework!” She raised her laptop in the air to show me. “So sorry.”

She joined us, still panting, and greeted Noodle. We headed inside with Jack.

“I’m getting a counter to put over there -” I pointed to the back wall where I’d keep the register. There was a door behind it where I could store products that weren’t on the floor yet. “And I’d like to have you install shelves about five and six feet up that will go the length of the wall.”

Jack made notes while we spoke. He asked questions, and didn’t use a single excessive word.

I led Jack around and noted where we would need his help. One of the walls needed to be patched up. There were spots where I wanted shelves built more solidly than anything I could make out of wood from the hardware store. I’d likely carry specialized dog food in large, heavy bags, and didn’t want even the slightest chance of anything collapsing.

Sophie reminded me to review the back room with Jack as well. It was a bigger mess than the front room. Jack gave me the name of a plumber to fix the leak that was the cause of the strange stain on the floor. I’d need an electrician to fix some wiring before Jack’s team could repair a separate wall. I imagined a pile of cash disappearing into the puddle on the floor, in bits and pieces and then in bucket loads. I grabbed Sophie’s arm to steady myself.

Once Jack left, Sophie and I got out our calendars to schedule days for cleaning and painting. I hadn’t picked a day yet, but we compared schedules and found a few options.

“We can try for Friday!” Sophie said. She entered an appointment into the calendar on her phone. “What do you think. 6? 7?”

“If Friday works out...six will be good. I’ll order pizza.” I breathed deeply - Hank would want to help, but could I ask him to do anything for me while he was going through this crisis?

“I’ll bring snacks.” Sophie grinned. “And a sheet to keep the food on. Wouldn’t want any of it getting on these floors. Oh, I have a friend or two who can help if you don’t mind paying them.”

“Yeah...”

I suddenly felt overwhelmed with the task ahead and sat down on the ground.
