CHAPTER 18

FRIENDS IN DARK PLACES

GARMO HOLD

A week after beginning the renovations of our new home, I grunted as I lifted a stack of roughly hewn wood. Moving them from the pile my group of lumberjacks had made, I glanced at the scouts keeping an eye on us. From their vantage point above the main gates of Garmo Hall, I knew they would see any trouble coming our way long before we would be in danger.

The two Tier 3 flame towers overlooking the gates were our primary defense against any surprise attacks at the moment. Getting the Gretchin to abandon their home on the highest level of the Hold hadn't taken much effort. My promise to provide Thermin and his people with food, shelter, and safe passage in and out of the mountain in exchange for supplying Valen with able-bodied miners went over better than expected.

I was almost bowled over in the Gretchin's rush to leave their squalid homes behind. Once the nearly two-hundred-strong group had left, I had claimed the System Station alone. Thankfully, I linked up perfectly with the one in the Hall, and it was a simple affair to summon the two towers. Orenx yawned loudly as I passed by the drake guarding the Golden Passage.

Tami had sent out several mounted scout parties of his kin and my forces over the past week to watch for any of the Arachnie Hive survivors, that time had also allowed my rage over Poom and Gregory's abduction to cool.

I was of the mind at this point to live and let live with all the other things on my plate. With homes for my people at the forefront of my mind, I dropped my load on a waiting wagon. Running my hand down Orenx's side as I passed the dozing drake, his sudden alertness made me freeze. I gazed around me as the drake rose from the ground with a threatening hiss.

Once I followed his gaze with a smirk at the muted hisses from his kin, I frowned at the rustling of bushes from the trees in front of us. Leaving my glaive on the ground where it had fallen as Orenx got up, I let the archers walking out of the Golden Passage do their jobs. The bedraggled horde of Arachnie that crawled out of the forest was nearly innumerable.

They were also in terrible shape, with severe burns covering their carapaces and exposed skin. What kept me from signaling my men to attack was the peace offering the arachnids brought with them. Held in claws and mouths and hugged defensively against bare chests were the freshly killed bodies of hundreds of Arishi. Guessing the Arachnie's numbers to be close to a thousand, I chose to see why they had come to my doorstep.

"Watch them, Orenx," I commanded my drake after picking up my glaive.

I slowly walked to the largest of the Arachnie horde, a towering female that could have looked an ogre in the eye. Assuming that the massive Arachine was the hive queen, I hoped she came with more than some rotting corpses.
