When the Rebbe was a child in Russia, a pogrom broke out in his hometown, Nikolayev. His mother took him and his brothers to hide in a shelter. There were many other women and children there, and some of the young children were so terrified that they began crying loudly. The mothers grew very anxious, for if the children’s cries were heard, they would all be discovered. The Rebbe, who was only five years old at the time, calmly soothed the crying children, one by one, with a pat on the cheek or a gentle whisper.
