9.5 A Full Utility Starting Hands Chart
Andy Bloch [15] has suggested that our preflop play can be largely distilled into a âchess openingsâ philosophy. Just as a chess player has a catalog of early moves and counter-moves, a poker player can generate a collection of options he can use in âstandardâ situations.
So we want to develop a full utility starting hands chart, which we can consider our âpoker openingsâ baseline. This chart becomes the starting point from which we make adjustments according to the current poker landscape.
There is certainly more than one way to do this, and more than one reasonable chart. You should consider the variables yourself, possibly customizing my chart according to your own strengths and preferences.
Having a baseline chart provides several advantages:
We have thought through what we plan to do in the vast majority of preflop situations. We can use whatever math, logic or feel we can bring to bear to convince ourselves that these baseline decisions are close to optimal.
