CHAPTER 12

Maddie glanced between Dylan and Noah. “It’s really too bad that we had to meet this way and not back in Ohio. You’re a good guy, Noah.”

It really is a shame, Dylan agreed silently.

Depositing his second beer bottle next to the growing collection of empty wine glasses, Noah grinned and mumbled a thank you.

Benji sighed and leaned back against his seat. “You never meet the good ones when it’s convenient.” He picked up his phone, blinked in surprise at whatever he saw, and pushed to his feet. “Think I’ll call it a night. See you all later.”

Dylan watched him stroll toward the elevators and glanced at the time on her phone. “It’s not even ten o’clock,” she noted.

“Ten bucks says he’s meeting someone,” Maddie quipped.

“Oh, he’s definitely meeting someone,” Dylan confirmed. “There’s no way he dressed like that for us.”

Noah’s gaze skipped back to the elevator area where Benji no longer stood before returning to the table. “Maybe he was dressed to go out on the town? You stunning ladies both look ready to hit the dance floor.”

“I’m so glad you noticed, hot stuff,” Maddie purred as she adjusted her cleavage-baring sequined top.

It took everything in Dylan not to glare at her best friend. Was she flirting with Noah? She shook herself—no, of course not. It was just Maddie’s personality. Dylan eyed her own outfit, a simple black sheath dress that didn’t display much, but was classy enough and helped to disguise her tummy.

Even though they originally planned to go out to dinner that evening, they had stayed in to continue chatting with Noah. To say he was the perfect faux fiancé was an understatement. He was handsome, charming, unassuming, and so easy going. In fact, every now and then she got the feeling he might actually like her. After all, those kisses had been hot! But there’s no way. Dylan wasn’t the kind of girl men like that went for.

“We were going to hit up the Flamin’ Go-Go for their disco dinner thing, then check out the Wayward Bird for dancing after,” Maddie said. “But we have a whole week to do that stuff.”

“I’d be happy to escort you two to the Wayward,” Noah offered, making Dylan feel all warm inside—until his next words doused the warmth: “We should make an effort to be seen out together, right?”

She was annoyed that she let herself be disappointed. It’s part of the act, she lectured herself. What would a man like that see in her? Dylan forced a bright smile. “That would be nice.”

Clapping excitedly, Maddie chirped, “Yes!”

Noah went out to get his car while the women ran up to freshen up in their rooms. “This is going to be awesome,” Madison said with a huge grin. “And he is so into you!”

“He’s being nice, Maddie,” Dylan said, glaring at the silver elevator panels in front of them. “He’s a nice person doing a solid for us.”

The door slid open and Maddie slipped out ahead of her. “He likes you, DeeDee!” she sang over her shoulder as she turned to her room.
