Carmen

After everything she’d been through, Carmen had thought after a shower and meal she’d fall into bed and sleep for days. She’d even turned down the offered sleep medication, wary enough of drugs even if they were in pill form and offered by a kind soul rather than fed into her veins by a mad scientist.

She should have taken the pills. Night one was fine. Night two was tolerable. Night three was a mess. A string of confusing dreams that had her mind racing later, she was wide awake. Physically, she felt rested enough. Mentally, well, she didn’t mind her brain being a little fuzzy. Fuzzy meant she could somewhat ignore the rollercoaster of emotions and doubt that assailed her whenever she thought of Nate. Or Pierce. Or Coy.

She rose from bed and headed down the hallway to where a set of double doors opened out to a large balcony with a view. The sky was dark, and the moon was a sliver hung behind thick clouds. A lovely sight, but it didn’t do enough for her restlessness.

A snap drew her attention down to the line of trees nearby. Perhaps she wasn’t the only one who couldn’t sleep tonight. Her brows furrowed. Though there was a clock by her bed, she hadn’t even glanced at it. Strange how quickly she’d broken the need to know the time. Even if she wasn’t captured for as long as some of the others, her life had quickly adapted to run by different factors. She ate when she was fed and slept when she wasn’t eating or being tortured.

The low scraggly bushes at the base of the tree line parted and a black shadow emerged. Her first thought was panther, but that couldn’t be right. Panthers were sleek. The shadow was rough. After a few held breaths she saw more. A shaggy mane. Golden eyes.

Pierce.

She exhaled as if someone had slapped her back and forced the air from her lungs, absolutely struck by not only the sight of him, but knowing without a doubt that it was him. Though they were staying in the same building, she hadn’t spoken to him since they’d arrived. She’d seen him from a distance, and he’d always appeared to be deep in thought.

Was his lion form as pensive? She had to know.

His head lifted, and the breeze caught his fur, tousling it just right, as if mother nature was brushing through his wild mane to make him more presentable.

Her heart sped and fingers twitched with the longing to touch him and make him real. She hurried back inside and descended the carpeted stairs as quickly as she could without creaking or stomping. Once outside she broke into a run and circled the building. A worry had grown like a stone in her gut, as if she’d miss him and never see him again.

But she didn’t miss him. She caught him prowling in a slow circle under the dim moonlight, and he seemed to be waiting for her.

She stopped short, not from fear but from awe.
