“How does Spassky respond?” I ask with bated breath.

“He takes Fischer’s knight with his bishop. I mean, after all, that knight is dangling. Fischer, in turn, takes the bishop but his overall position now looks weaker than Spassky’s.” But as the Gnome describes the next several moves, it becomes clear to me that Fischer had a hunch he could lure Spassky into chasing him like a dog following the scent of red meat. In so doing, Fischer’s position grows stronger and stronger and Spassky’s becomes disorganized, and he can’t regain the initiative. In chess, the initiative is often so valuable that maintaining it is worth being down a piece or two.

Several moves later, the Gnome animates, “Wow. Spassky is rubbing his forehead. He just risked moving his king towards the center. Fischer took the Russian’s second knight and now Spassky’s king is exposed and in check. Spassky seems punch-drunk…my God, he resigns!”
