Chapter 6

Torque

Sitting at the table, I listen as the guys all discuss the threat against Jesse as well as the animals.

We left several of the Prospects with her at the clinic while we have this fucked up meeting that’s really not getting us anywhere.

“Where’s Snake?” I finally ask, noticing for the first time that he’s not in the room. If anyone can find some kind of lead, it’s that crazy fucker.

“He was waiting on a phone call.” Prez answers.

“Since when are we allowed to be late for a fucking call?” Gear, one of the twins demands.

I watch as the Prez’s eyes harden, staring straight at Gear until he looks away. The fucker knows better than to question the Prez.

Just as everyone starts up talking once again, the door opens as Snake walks in with his nose still stuck in one of his computers.

Our eyes stay on him, watching as he takes his seat, still not saying a word.

“Snake?” Prez asks loudly.

Snake looks up quickly, surprise in his face like he couldn’t remember what room he was in. That’s Snake though. He gets lost in data when a computer is around.

“What did you find out?” Prez prods with exasperation.

“Sorry. I started looking into Miss Rayne’s family. Especially her sister.” He answers and I lean further onto the table.

“Annie Rayne was married quite a few years ago. From the road blocks I came across trying to find this information, someone tried hard to hide that the marriage ever happened.”

“Who would want to hide it and why?” I ask before anyone else can.

“My guess is their mom, Charlotte Rayne, she has political connections.” He answers.

“Right now I just know she was married. I’m still trying to find out who the guy was, why they divorced and where he is currently. It’s the only thing I can find. It’s as if the family is squeaky clean.” He shrugs.

“No one is that clean.” Sprocket, the other twin adds.

“Well at least it’s something.” Prez sighs. “Torque, ask her about this marriage. Maybe she can shed some light on this. We need to find out quickly if it’s a dead-end.”

Shaking my head, the Prez dismisses Church quickly so the rest of the guys can get back to the ranch to keep an eye on the horses out there.

Walking out to the bar, I take a seat on the stool signaling to the Prospect to bring me a beer. Bear slaps me on the back as he takes the seat next to me.

“Something tells me you have fallen despite all the negative shit you have spouted over the years about love.”

“Nah man, I’m just having fun.” I protest even as I feel like I am betraying what Jesse and I currently have.

“I say you’re full of shit!”

I sit there quietly not even arguing my case because I have a feeling he’s probably right.

“How do you know?” I ask.

“Know what?”

“When you meet the one. How do you know they are the one?” For the first time in a long time I’m being completely honest.
