CHAPTER 21
Abraxas led them all toward the camp, wondering exactly how they were going to fit all these new bodies and feed all these new mouths. Heâd been so lost in the fog of his own mind, it was hard for him to remember what their food situation even was here.
Likely, they would need to hunt. Abraxas felt more like himself, though, and he knew Lore could hunt with the best. Between the two of them, they could feed this entire village of people for a few weeks.
The sailors could not stay, however. Heâd already made that decision before they hit the shore. While he understood they were looking for treasure, he also knew the heart of a siren captain like Loreâs friend. The woman had no ability to stay in one place for very long. Her restless spirit would send her wandering for ages before the sea swallowed her up. That was the only fitting end for a woman like her.
Grumbling, he moved his tail a little aggressively and knocked a few of the soldiers over. They stumbled to the side and then remembered what heâd said. They could follow, but donât get too close.
Thankfully, he was still in his dragon form or they would have seen his grin. Instead, all they saw was a dragon baring its teeth at them.
Their faces all went white and the three men gave him a little more room. Good. They should fear him, even though he had vowed to help them. Soon, they would understand that dragons were terrifying beings with fickle minds.
A soft snort interrupted his musings and Lore looked up at him where she strode beside his shoulder. âYouâre doing that on purpose.â
âDoing what?â he asked, although he knew what she meant.
âGive them a little time to get used to even seeing a dragon, let alone three.â The smile on her face never wavered when she looked at him, as though the expression was unbidden and one she couldnât control. âTheyâre not staying long, anyway. I promised them gold. Thatâs the only reason theyâre even on this shore.â
âAnd because their ship is broken.â
âThey will fix it.â
He tilted his head to the side, peering down at her with one eye. âWhy does that feel as though you volunteered me to help them fix it?â
âYou are the largest person here. Iâm sure knocking down a few trees would be so easy for you.â That wry grin twisted a little. âBesides, I wouldnât mind watching you work. Itâs been a long time since Iâve witnessed the true power of a dragon.â
He knew she was manipulating him. But he wouldnât mind flexing his muscles and showing his wings off a little if it made her look at him like that for a little longer. Heâd missed that look. The one that said she couldnât stop staring at him, with the heat in her eyes that whispered she wanted more time with him. Alone.
Oh, how heâd missed her. Life simply wasnât the same without his Lore.
