Latest business results (June 2020, half year)

Revenues were down and profits crashed as the COVID‐19 pandemic led to the imposition of severe restrictions on funeral services. The company also noted that, while precise data was not yet available, anecdotal feedback suggested that the number of deaths during the period had fallen, perhaps due to social distancing requirements leading to a decline in the number of people dying from the flu. Australian revenues fell by 8.5 per cent from the June 2019 half, mainly due to a decline in funeral service business, although memorial park revenues were also weak. The company reported a significant move away from expensive funerals and towards low‐cost alternatives, including direct cremation services. New Zealand represents about 11 per cent of total turnover, and revenues fell 10.5 per cent. Singapore is just 5 per cent of company turnover, and revenues actually rose by 2.6 per cent, with an increase in the number of funerals and the receipt of some subsidies from the Singapore government.
