We sped south. The landscape below us whizzed by quickly, and it was hard to discern anything other than blurred colors. Sion grew tired and eased her pace, but I soon spotted the unruly goblin army.

This should slow them down, Sion said. She flew low as we passed over the creatures, breathing fire among their ranks. The smell of scorched flesh hit my nostrils and I tried not to gag. With a few flaps of her wings, Sion lifted us higher and we continued toward Keth. I looked back and saw the march of the goblins had temporarily stopped.

That bought us some time, but I’m not sure it will be enough.

Let them come, Sion replied. I’ll flame them all.

Keth came into view, its thin stone wall the only thing that stood in the way of the approaching army. Sion descended and landed outside the town near the bridge that spanned the defensive trench. I leaped from the saddle and hit the ground running.

“Get inside the town!” I shouted as I sprinted over the bridge. “Goblins are coming!”

The townsfolk nearby gave me odd looks, but they carried on with their tasks, ignoring my warning. A group of men was loading a wagon with ore, and I stopped when I reached them.

“I need your help,” I said breathlessly. “We need to get everyone behind these walls. Goblins are coming from the hills.”

The men exchanged glances with each other, then one started laughing. That caused the others to do the same.

“That’s a good one! You almost had me there,” one of the men said.

“It’s not a joke. They’re heading here right now.”

“Sure they are,” the man replied.

The others continued chuckling as they worked. I spun around, looking for Aston. The big man wasn’t showing off his goblin trophy, so I headed for his smithy. It was a short square building across from his home. I flung the door open and rushed inside without thinking. A wave of heat struck me, and I spotted Aston pounding a large hammer against a rod of glowing hot metal.

Aston looked up from his work and offered a friendly nod. It was so hot inside the place that I was already felt sweat forming on my brow. I maneuvered my way through his shop and motioned for him. He tossed the smoldering rod into a bucket of water and it sizzled and steamed.

“What’s going on?” Aston asked. “You look troubled.”

“Troubled doesn’t even come close,” I huffed. “There’s an entire army of goblins approaching from the north. We need to warn everyone and close the gates.”

Aston set his hammer down and pulled off his gloves. “An army of the buggers, you say? So the one I found was a scout.”

“Yes. People aren’t listening to me, though. We don’t have much time.”

“I’ll get the mayor,” Aston said. “Come with me in case he has questions.” The big man paused, then grabbed his hammer. “Just in case I need it.” He smirked.

Aston hurried out of the smithy, and I followed quickly on his heels.
