Chapter Seventeen
Leyton leaned against the outside of the cave wall, tears streaming down his face. The man with hornsâRivaldâhad told him heâd let Lorelei go when sheâd escaped Leytonâs van.
Why did he do that after telling me she was the one? After I got attached and started loving her? When Iâd dared to hope that for once in my sorry fucking life Iâd get something worth having?
He turned to Rivald now and voiced his thoughts, staring at the man who had orchestrated his life for such a long time now. What answer did he expect? That Rivald had got it wrong? How could that be, when he knew everything? When whoever told Rivald what to do knew everything? If they had got this wrong, what else had they fucked up? Had Leyton killed people he shouldnât have?
Rivald ignored Leytonâs questions and instead said, âI hear your thoughts, Leyton, remember that. You should not have asked her to meet you. Not when she is not the one we thought she was. That she isâ¦one of us.â Rivald turned and walked inside the cave, calling, âCome. Let us discover what happened. Let us find out where the real Lorelei is.â
With no choice but to follow, a force pushing him inside the cave no matter how hard Leyton resisted, he followed Rivald into the depths, into the room where Leyton always received his instructions.
Rivald sat in his chair, fingers cupping the edges of the arm rests, and closed his eyes. Getting information, no doubt. Leyton, out of habit, kneeled before him, head bowed. Thoughts of Lorelei entered his mind again, and he tried to reach out to her once more, to stress that she must meet him. They could run away together, start afresh elsewhere. He could be loved.
A blinding pain ripped through his head, stabbing at the inside of his skull.
âSorry. Iâm sorry. I wonât try and contact her again unless you say.â
Leyton waited for what seemed a long time, his head throbbing with remnants of the pain, and picked through his confused thoughts. Perhaps the being who instructed Rivald had got his wires crossed. Perhaps LoreleiâJessica, think of her as Jessica nowâthe woman for him, was out there waiting. Maybe Jessicaâs appearance had confused the being, making him think she was the one when she wasâwhat had Rivald said?âone of them.
Jessica hadnât struck him as such. She hadnât displayed any signs that she dreamed like he did, like Barry did. But then, maybe sheâd needed contact with Leyton in order for her gift to manifest? That had happened with Barry. The copâs ability to hear Leyton had come on quickly.
I donât know. I just know I fell for her. How can I love another now? How can I work with Jessica, remain aloof?
And he knew heâd have to. Jessica would be used to help them in their quest now. Heâd have to visit her dreams and relay messages. Tell her what to do. Could he do that? Could he keep his
