Chapter Sixteen

Cameron

“Got a minute, Cam?” Garreth asks as I’m finishing up my shift.

“Sure thing,” I reply, closing out my receipts and handing everything over.

I follow him into his office, taking a quick second to check to see if Kellen is behind the bar yet—he is, by the way—and step inside the small office. “Everything okay?”

“Of course,” he replies immediately, allowing me to take a deep breath again. Ever since last summer when he called me in to talk about what I did, I’ve always gotten a little sweaty in the pits at these impromptu meetings. “Take a seat.” When I do, he continues, “How’s everything going at Kellen’s?”

“Fine,” I respond a little too quickly. Clearing my throat, I add, “I mean, it’s going well. He’s a good host.”

Garreth nods. “Okay, listen, there’s been some employee changes, and I wanted to run something by you.”

I sit up a little straighter in my seat. “Shoot.”

“Well, Jillian is stepping away to work with her husband, and Kallie is moving to the lunch shift. Meredith was looking to adjust her shift because she signed up to take night classes at the community college. I’m trying to see if anyone was interested in switching lunch and evenings shifts with her.”

I swallow hard, my throat suddenly tight. “Umm,” I start, but he keeps going.

“Ideally, I’d like to swap two employees, you know? We have a great team in place right now, and everyone works hard. I don’t want to cut back to try to squeeze another lunch server in. That’s not fair to anyone.”

I nod, my mind reeling.

When I first started here, I trained on both shifts and worked both, but lately, I’ve stuck to the day shift. I like coming and going during the sunlight hours, especially since my car has always been unreliable. And while I make great tips working the current shift I’m on, I’m aware the dinner crew tends to make more, and that’s not a bad idea right now. Considering I’m going to be replacing pretty much everything I own, a little more cash would definitely come in handy, and even though I haven’t been able to fix my car yet, I could possibly catch a ride with Kellen on the days we work similar hours.

It sounds like a win-win.

“I might know someone.”

His eyes light up. “Who?”

“Me.”

He seems a bit taken back. “Really? You’d be interested in working the dinner shift?”

I give him a shrug, averting my gaze. “Well, yeah. I mean, I’m going to have to buy a lot of stuff, and I still have a little money owed to you and Reag.”

“That’s not a priority, Cam. You’ll pay it back when you do.”

I’m already shaking my head. “No, I have to keep the schedule we set. I don’t want to drag this out any longer than it is. I have a little money saved up, and was hoping I’d be able to pay you guys off early, but now…” I swallow hard. “Since I have to get a new mattress and a few other things, I may not be able to do it as early as I thought.
