Chapter Twenty

Briar

“So, Darcy, hopefully, Briar hasn’t told you too many atrocious things about me.”

I hesitated slightly midbite with some eggs benedict between my plate and my mouth.

The brunch place was too fancy for my fishnets and plaid mini skirt. There were crystal chandeliers and intricately carved wood table legs. Everything on the menu was at least thirty dollars, and I had like seven forks.

“Nothing atrocious at all.”

“Please, call me Josiah. No need for that Sir business.”

I smiled at my food. Darcy was good at lying by omission. I hadn’t told him anything, so no, nothing atrocious. However, I could tell him plenty.

My father had started our meal by saying, Order whatever you like. Don’t look at the price. Which sounds nice, but the way my dad said things like that just made me want to roll my eyes. He always tried to make everyone understand what a generous person he was. I was pretty sure generous people didn’t need to say it.

“How long have you two been together?” Nancy asked.

“About three weeks.” Darcy smiled at her, and I couldn’t blame him.

Nancy was kind and, from what I had seen, a perfect mom to Gunnar and Zoe, who were with her parents today and not present at breakfast.

“Prom will be coming up soon. Are you guys going?”

“As a matter of fact, we are; Briar is excited,” he said and turned to give me a private smile and a wink.

I was happy I invited Darcy. He carried most of the conversation and seemed genuinely pleased to do so. He left me to inhale my food and smile from time to time, answering simple questions.

“Oh, I almost forgot!” Nancy squealed with excitement. Yes, squealing like teenagers when they see their friends at the mall.

She pulled out a package wrapped in balloon paper and handed it to me.

“In case we don’t see you for your birthday. Oh, open it, please.” She bounced in her seat a little, so I nodded, opening the card and pretending to scan the long message she had written inside where she signed her and my father’s names.

“Thank you so much.” I nodded and set it down before gingerly tearing into the package and seeing two pairs of fishnet stockings. One bright purple pair and one bright pink, each studded in the cross sections with pearls. “Oh wow, these are cool, Nance; thanks.”

“I told her you might not still be in the phase of dressing like…that.”

“It’s not a phase, Joe; that’s her style,” Nancy chastised as my father rolled his eyes.

I gave Nancy another encouraging smile and set the tights to the side of my plate.

“Have you gotten to meet River yet?” my father asked Darcy, and my shoulders tightened immediately.

My mother did not speak ill of my father, but my father did not share that same respect for her. He had learned that I wouldn’t put up with it, so it wasn’t as frequent as it used to be.

“Oh yes, we had tacos last night; it was fun. She’s a doll.
