CHAPTER FOURTEEN

“Howdy, stranger,” Ashley’s voice, with its slight touch of a Southern accent to it, immediately made Morgan relax a little. He didn’t, however, miss the jibe. He wasn’t going to fight about it. He deserved it.

“Sorry,” he said. “It’s been a little crazy.”

She laughed. “So, what else is new?”

She was right. It wasn’t new. He looked down at his shoes. A few drops of rain spattered the ground. “I know.”

She didn’t dwell on the sore spot, though. “What’s the Academy like?”

It was a good question. “Exhausting. Exciting. Challenging. Everybody else is so damn young. I feel like an old man. That thing about age only being a number? Clearly a saying made up by people who’ve never had to run a 5K with people ten years younger than them.”

She laughed. “It’s not all physical, though, right?”

“No. It’s not. It’s not all law enforcement information, either. There’s a lot of psychology, a lot of analysis of data. I’m a little surprised how often the skills I developed as a doctor translate well into skills I’ll use as an FBI agent. There’s a lot of getting into how other people think and how to look at a sea of facts and figure out how to make it coalesce into something recognizable.”

“That’s good.” She didn’t sound so certain.

He knew she had reservations about his decision to pursue training as an FBI agent. She thought he’d been rash. Typical Ashley, though. She was doing her best to be supportive. “I think it will be. How are you?”

The conversation felt oddly stilted. A few weeks ago, Ashley had stopped by his apartment ostensibly to show him an article about Anna McCleary, the young woman who had disappeared recently whose case seemed so similar to his own sister’s case. They’d had a glass of wine and things had gotten a bit romantic. His hand went to his mouth as he remembered the taste of her lips, tart with wine, when he’d kissed her.

At first, she’d kissed him back, but then she’d pulled away and left hurriedly, saying that coming there had been a mistake.

Morgan didn’t think so. Now, he had to convince her of that.

“I’m okay. I’m thinking about putting the house on the market.”

Ah, so it was more of a business call. Not just a check in. “Any particular reason?”

She sighed. “It’s time. It’s too big for one person. And it’s one of those daily reminders . . .” Her words trailed off.

She didn’t need to finish the sentence. He knew what she meant. It was a daily reminder of all the hopes and dreams they’d had when they’d first bought the house, of the way they’d wanted to fill it with family and friends, laughter and love. None of those dreams had come true. Morgan had always been too busy, too distracted by his work. Dinner parties had been canceled because he’d get caught up in a case. Romantic evenings had been ruined when he’d get home so exhausted that he’d fall asleep the second he sat down.
