CHAPTER FOURTEEN

“How’d you sleep?” Morgan asked as he buckled himself into the SUV the next morning. His alarm had rung at a little after five a.m. He’d taken a quick shower and brushed his teeth with the toothbrush and toothpaste he’d snagged in the hotel gift shop the night before. Now it was barely seven and they were hitting the road.

Danielle shrugged. “I slept as well as I ever do.”

He looked up sharply. He hadn’t noticed the dark circles under her eyes until then. They were deeper than they’d been the day before. She looked exhausted. “Do you want me to drive?”

She huffed out a laugh. “No. I appreciate the offer. If I get sleepy, I might take you up on that, but I think I’ll be okay.”

He gave her a long look. He knew all too well what it was like to be a bit of a control freak. It was inevitable, in his opinion, as you rose through your field. You advanced because you were better at some things than your peers. Then it was hard to delegate because you knew no one would do it as well as you would. It was easy to burn out when you tried to do everything. The trick was finding a few things that you could live with being done at less than the gold standard. It seemed like normal highway driving might be one of those things, but he didn’t want to push. “I’m happy to help.”

“I’ll keep it in mind.” Danielle put her sunglasses on and started the SUV.

Morgan leaned back in his seat. He hadn’t slept particularly well either. He’d stayed up too late poring over Fiona’s file again and then his dreams had been a whirl of images. The photo of the girl in Fiona’s backpack. Chairs flying out of windows. Trailers with broken locks. He flipped the sun visor down to block the glare from the early morning sun.

“I asked Divinia to run a background check on Hatton as soon as she got in this morning. Let’s see if she has anything yet.” Danielle hit the button on her phone and Divinia answered right away, her voice coming through the car’s speakers loud and clear. “Hi, boss.”

“Were you able to look into Tom Hatton at all?” Danielle asked.

“I’ve got some preliminary stuff, but there’s more to do.”

“Anything interesting?”

“Depends on what you mean by interesting. He had a lot of debt. I tried to see if it was drugs or gambling or any of the usual culprits, but I think he just lived larger than he earned. He had a big house, two fancy cars, and a boat. Lots of trips with his family to fancy resorts.”

Morgan knew more than a few doctors who had done the same. They saw all the zeroes on their paychecks and forgot there were still student loans to service and taxes to pay and mortgages to keep up on. It was easy to get yourself into a hole that would be hard to dig yourself out of.
