Chapter Nine

Responsibilities

At practice, Coach Johnson was particularly hard on the team because of tomorrow’s game. Near the end of practice, the scrimmage began to take a toll on Tony. Lester had received the ball more often than usual and had collided with Tony several times. The sun began to disappear in the autumn afternoon as Coach Johnson sent a play to the offensive huddle.

“You ready, Tony?” Travis said. “Coach hasn’t tried the tackle trap yet, and you know he loves to practice that play.”

Tony gave Travis a questioning look.

“Do I look like I’m not ready?” Tony replied, curiously.

The day was not as hot as it had been earlier in the week, but work on and off the field had taken a toll on Tony’s mind. He wasn’t tired on the field; he was never tired there. But he wasn’t excited either. More than anything, Tony was concerned.

Craig broke the huddle and approached the ball with his offensive line. He wiped the sweat out of his eyes. He placed his hands between the legs of his center, ready for the snap. Both the offensive and defensive lines moved to a ready position, one hand and two feet on the ground.

“Ready, set, hike!” Craig yelled.

Craig immediately turned and handed the ball to Lester. The large offensive linemen moved surprisingly quickly to open a hole for Lester. The defensive line could not keep up.

Lester and Tony met again, and they did not change their behavior. They charged at one another with little thought for the aftermath of the play. Both players were ready for impact. They ran at each other with no fear.

When Lester and Tony collided, Tony tackled Lester as usual. The difference this time around came through sheer force. Tony usually pushed Lester backward. This time, though, Lester was so determined that he knocked Tony backward. Lester went down with a gain of 6 yards instead of the usual five. Tony laid on his back.
