Another formation was called the ‘wedge’; legionaries formed up in a triangle, then the blokes at the front charged forward, with their swords driving the enemy line apart.

Most importantly, the Roman army always formed up carefully, quickly and in total silence! This took incredible discipline and would’ve been very off-putting for the enemy – it’s a bit scary to see that the army you’re about to fight is quietly getting ready to obliterate you.

Riding in a chariot, Boudicca led her troops in a charge against the Roman legionaries. Unfortunately it was like running into a wall (a wall with sharp spikes sticking out of it). The British tribes retreated in confusion and chaos. The Romans marched on, slaughtering everyone in their path.

By the end, only 400 Romans had died and 80,000 Britons had been killed! It was a massacre (or ‘a glorious victory’ if you were a Roman).
