The restaurant was in the old town, within the walls of the castle, less than three minutes’ walk from Le Señor, though the sticky sex club was not on Fernando’s agenda…not tonight. All the bars and restaurants on the street were busy, but he’d found one with a spare table at the back of the terrace where he wouldn’t be observed by passers-by. He wore a light grey T-shirt and cream chinos. He’d left the Hublot watch in the safe deposit box in favour of a cheap Casio. It was less showy and less likely to be worn by a premiership football player. He had also traded his black cap for a straw fedora to further hide his identity.

The waiter took his drink order. Fernando had asked for a vodka and Diet Coke and texted Joshua his location.

Joshua had agreed to meet him in this area of town, but as neither of them knew the names of the restaurants, they couldn’t be exact about where.

Fernando’s heart raced. He took a deep breath, trying to calm himself. Since ditching the stag party, he’d felt a hundred percent better. The depressive cloud that had settled over him and grown gloomier as the evening progressed had gone. The nervousness that affected him now was something else. He was fearful, yes, but excited too…and relieved. A couple of hours ago, he’d been resigned to never seeing Joshua again. Now here they were, about to meet for the second night.

He watched the continuous stream of tourists passing along the cobbled street. It was coming up to eleven, and the town was heaving. It would probably stay that way until one or two. He searched the faces of the men walking by, looking for one in particular.

There he was. Joshua stood out in the crowd. In a sea of handsome, suntanned faces, Fernando’s gaze was drawn straight to him. His breath caught as he watched Joshua approach. He was dressed in a pair of blue linen trousers and a white, open-neck shirt, looking equally casual and stylish. He paused outside the restaurant, scanning the tables. Fernando raised his hand, waving him over. The corners of Joshua’s mouth curled upwards, and he made his way to the back of the terrace.

He wore a pair of dark-framed spectacles, which suited his face, making him look even sexier.

“Hi.” Fernando beamed. “I didn’t know you wore glasses.”

“Oh. Yes.” Joshua touched the edge of the frames. “I’ve been wearing contacts all day. My eyes were tired from the heat. I had to rest them.”

“I like them,” Fernando said as he sat. “So cute.”

“Thanks.”

“I’m glad you came. I wasn’t sure you would when I sent the text. I thought you’d be out with your father.”

Joshua shook his head and put both hands on the table. “No. He stood me up again. Another delay. He says he’ll be here in the morning, but if I were a gambler, I wouldn’t put money on it. My dad’s not the most reliable man in the world.
