No one wants to hunt with the guy who is constantly blasting on his whistle in an effort to get his dog under control. On the other hand, a whistle does have its place in upland hunting, even though your dog is usually only 10 or 20 yards away. Your dog should already understand that a series of long blasts means Come. Now you can introduce a whistle command that simply tells him, “Hey, pay attention. I want you to change directions now.”

A whistle doesn’t have to be especially loud, just enough volume to get his attention.
