How challenging?

The walk is on well-used footpaths, often following the river, but with the option of climbing up to get the superb vantage point of High Tor at Matlock Bath and climbing above the town of Belper. With it being in the valley some paths will be muddy after rain.

Accommodation and transport

There are plenty of B&Bs and guesthouses along the route. Public transport links are good. There are excellent transport links once in the valley from Matlock to Derby and Derby to Shardlow.

Best day-walk

Don’t miss out – it’s all great. Heatherdene to Baslow has the beauty of the rugged peakland gritstone edges. But do continue on to discover the wonders of the Industrial Revolution in the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site and the wildlife of Cromford Canal.
