Chapter Three

I tried my best to put my worries from yesterday behind me when I woke up. I’d come to the conclusion there must be a logical explanation why Kara was so upset by the accident in Yokohama. I was sure Hiro would give me a perfectly plausible reason why the android had malfunctioned in this way when he returned from Osaka with Oliver.

I activated Kara as soon as I’d finished eating breakfast. I wanted to make a Japanese dish as a special treat for my husband when he returned home. I thought Kara could help me shop for Japanese ingredients at the supermarket in Odaiba. Kara said Japanese curry was moderately simple to make before she pulled out two of the new saucepans we’d bought in Kappabashi and a rice cooker from a cupboard below the kitchen cooker. She then told me we’d need to buy a bag of rice, vegetables, and chicken, as well as S&B Japanese Golden Curry. That seemed simple enough, but when Kara mentioned S&B, I wondered if she was programmed to suggest certain brands.

We had a lovely morning buying ingredients and preparing everything to make the curry, and it all looked and smelled delicious when it was bubbling on the stove in the afternoon. Kara really was very pleasant and easy to be around. I could see there were a lot of advantages to having a personal android. They were a lot more patient and easy to get along with than many human beings. We shared lots of smiles and it almost felt like Kara was human, for a while.

I was watching Kara putting away the dishes and the saucepans when I realized I’d spent the whole day speaking to her in a gentle tone. I knew the only reason for this was because I couldn’t help feeling concerned about her breakdown in Yokohama. As each hour passed, I thought more and more about the situation. I really wanted to know the reason for Kara’s strange behaviour and I couldn’t wait to speak to Hiro and Oliver to find out what went wrong.

We’d just finished cleaning up the kitchen at two o’clock in the afternoon when Hibiki announced that someone was approaching the front door. I didn’t expect Oliver to return home until the evening but I went to the door to see who it might be. I was delighted when the door opened and it was my husband!

‘You’re home early,’ I said, as I rushed forward and wrapped my arms around his neck. When I noticed he wasn’t alone, I jumped back in surprise. Hiro Suzuki was standing behind Oliver with a large Western man by his side. Hiro was smiling at our brief display of affection and the big man in a black suit next to him was laughing.

‘Welcome, Oliver Montgomery, Hiro Suzuki and Ethan Johnston,’ said Hibiki.

‘Poppy, you know Hiro and this is Ethan Johnston, the president of N.E.A.T. Incorporated,’ Oliver said to me.

‘How do you do, Ethan?’ I said. ‘Nice to see you again Hiro, please come in.
