Chapter 14

I was glad I’d taken Tilly’s advice. I felt a hundred times better after taking an afternoon nap then spending a few hours clearing the backlog of admin on my desk. For once, everything was up-to-date and in order. The club was running smoothly.

There was a knock on the office door, and it opened. Merrie poked her head around the side. “Hey. I’ve got a lady on the snow globe in the bar. She’s asking for you. Her name’s Mini Rudd.”

“Great! Can you bring it through?”

“Already done.” Merrie stepped into the office and placed the snow globe on my desk. She smiled before leaving the room.

A middle-aged woman with a severe pixie cut and large dark eyes stared at me. With those strong facial features, she’d look perfect on a catwalk.

“Mini Rudd?” I asked.

“That’s right. I got your messages. You’re Tempest?”

“Yes. Thanks for getting back to me. Although I’m surprised it took you so long. You do know what happened to Nile?”

There was a pause for a quick heartbeat. “Of course.”

“You don’t seem particularly bothered.”

“Why should I be? He broke my heart a long time ago. I don’t love him. He’s my husband in name only.” She glanced away.

“How long have you been separated?”

“Long enough for me not to care about him. What business is it of yours?”

“Your husband was murdered. We’re looking for who killed him.”

Her eyes narrowed a fraction. “You’re suggesting it could be me? Wasn’t he surrounded by dangerous criminals every day? Surely, you should be looking at other inmates.”

“I have. That line of investigation didn’t work out. So, I’m looking elsewhere.”

“At me?”

“Perhaps.”

“I can’t help you.”

“Can’t or won’t?”

Her lips thinned. “You know nothing about our relationship.”

“Then enlighten me.” I sat back and leveled a glare at her. If she’d been in the room, the air would be crackling with tension.

She remained silent before giving a loud sigh. “What do you want to know?”

“How did you feel when Nile started dating again?”

She blinked rapidly. “Who told you that?”

“Oh, well, I figured that’s what he’d do, since he was single.”

“Single! Tell me her name.”

“Her... name?” Didn’t Mini know Nile had been seeing Jacinda?

“Yes! The woman he was cheating with.”

“Have I missed something? You were separated. He couldn’t cheat on you if you weren’t together.”

She hissed at me. “That’s a technicality. We were still married. How was he able to start a new relationship? He’s been in prison for years.”

“That’s something I can’t comment on. You said he broke your heart. What did he do?”

“Did you meet my husband before he died?”

“Not to speak to.”

“You were lucky. He couldn’t be trusted. He always had an angle or a line to sell.”

“That must have gotten annoying, especially if you didn’t feel you could trust him.”

“I was right not to trust him if he was seeing other women behind my back. Wait, it’s not that child, is it?”

“Child?”

“I went to visit him once, and there was this girl at the prison with long dark hair. We bumped into each other when she was leaving.
