CHAPTER NINETEEN

Hours after Nelson’s detailed exposition of the Prodigal Suns’ mission for Professor Bergen’s benefit and the amusement of the other operators, the unit still didn’t have a translated journal. Bergen had jotted down what he could, based on what he knew about the journal’s dead magical language. That included alternate translations for almost every line of text he had translated for them, which made things more complicated since it didn’t narrow anything down.

They needed a clear-cut path and plan, and this hadn’t gotten them that.

Bergen assured them that when Dr. Kamala was free and could offer her linguistic expertise, they would develop an accurate translation of the journal’s contents.

The Prodigal Suns still hadn’t heard from Samsu or this Dr. Kamala, but there were other things for the Suns to focus on now. Sergeant Boyd had received a communication request from Command, which garnered him strange looks from his team.

The team leader stepped out of the drawing room to find a private location for the call with Command. Boyd tried to avoid that when possible. The last time, Colonel MacBlair had told him to put his big boy pants on and figure things out on his own without calling his superior when things went sideways. This time, his commanding officer had called him, which made the situation seem urgent.

That call didn’t last very long, but when Boyd returned to the drawing room, he had a completely different aura, and the schedule was scrapped. Robbins and Gonzalez returned to the drawing room with suspicious scowls. Emily, Nelson, and Stryker had remained to work on some additional research, but they were really waiting for Sergeant Boyd to rejoin them since the feeling in the air had switched from waiting things out to “something’s happening, and we don’t know what.”

“What gives?” Robbins asked as she marched across the drawing room.

“Waited ten minutes for someone else to show up,” Gonzalez added as he lumbered into the room after her. “Everybody lose track of time or what?”

“Sorry to ruin your worldview,” Nelson replied, “but we were told to hang tight here. I’m pretty sure that cancels shift change.”

“Yeah, sure.” Robbins shrugged before slumping onto one of the open seats, leaning back, and crossing one leg over the opposite knee. “Fuck perimeter checks and sentry duty, right? It’s not like there’s a real threat out there with a high potential of coming for us. Let’s all just fuck off and see what happens.”

The medic opened his mouth to offer a witty and scathing remark that would make him sound like a smartass, but Gonzalez beat him to it. “Where’s the professor?”

“In his fucking posh study,” Stryker replied, extending a hand toward the hallway while unfurling his fingers in a way that made him look like a horror character. “Shut away from the rest of the world and your face.”

Nelson snorted.

Robbins shook her head but didn’t manage to hide the smile that appeared on her dark gray lips.

“Where’s Sergeant Boyd, then?” Gonzalez asked.

“Had to take a call,” Emily replied when the big guy looked at her.
