Chapter 16

With the animals in tow, Doreen got everybody into the vehicle and then headed over to Annabelle’s apartment. The boyfriend had been less than pleased about meeting her there but had finally given in, wanting to go right now, so that he could be done with this. She pondered somebody who thought he would get past all this so fast. He was a character after all. If it were her, no way. If something happened to Nan, it would take Doreen a long time to get past it, and Nan was older and had had a good run.

Somebody like Annabelle—who was young and full of life, who had already suffered so much tragedy—how was that even remotely something that people got over so quickly? Doreen didn’t understand that mentality, and no doubt Joseph was grieving. Yet she certainly didn’t feel that that was the main issue, just his need to compartmentalize this and to move on—which she could understand, but she didn’t think she could do that.

Particularly where you lived with that person, and supposedly he was in love with her. Although they’d obviously had a lot of problems, from what everybody had said, Annabelle had been an absolutely lovely lady. Therefore, the grief and the shock of her death would be that much harder for everybody to deal with.

Doreen could already imagine that by the number of people saying, such a waste, such a loss, died too young. And all those statements were true, but then it went for anybody who was taken before their time by another’s hand. That’s the part that Doreen was aggravated about. Disease was bad enough. Accidents happened too, but to think that people were dealing with a loss because of a murder—and the second one in that family—Doreen couldn’t even imagine how the poor parents were getting along.

It’s almost as if they had left to get away and apparently had split up over the son’s death, but now having lost their daughter as well, she wondered if there was any hope of the parents finding a way past this. … It would have been unfathomable, but people somehow deal with this, day by day, coping in ways that she had never seen. She walked up the stairs to the right door. She saw Joseph, restlessly shifting from foot to foot.

He saw her, and a look of relief washed over his face. “Finally,” he cried out.

She stated, “I’m early.”

He glared at her, stiffening. “I don’t want to be here.”

She nodded. “And if there was a way to get in without asking you, I would have done it already.”

He sighed, nodded, and pointed. “Let’s just get this done.” With that, he opened the door and let her go in first. With both Mugs and Goliath on leashes, she walked into the apartment and stopped almost at the entranceway. He came in behind her and slammed the door. She looked back at him and frowned.

He shrugged. “It’s not a place I want to be.”

“Are you moving out?”

“I was just going to take my stuff and run,” he muttered.
