Well fuck a duck. I think that might have gone about as well as could be expected. He listened, and I walked away in one piece. Losing a limb to a lion was a real concern when I cooked up this idea. I thought Sila would be the only one to object to Ayden joining us, but Blake and Sands took one look at Ayden and his little scouting party and suddenly things got overly complicated. Blake couldn’t believe Ayden would bring Sasha here, Sands couldn’t believe Blake ever thought it would be any other way. Then there was the conversation about letting Sasha inside the city. It was too dangerous, the safest place, Sands wasn’t ready to see her, Blake was done, but they couldn’t avoid her. It went around and around, and neither of them was capable of engaging their higher thinking about what Ayden’s arrival meant for our plans to search the city or our current partnership with an asura. Let alone what Ayden might bring to the party. And Sila, all she could see was a party that outnumbered us three to one, even if Sands and Blake stood with us. Which wasn’t likely.

I’m not sure how I feel about what Sasha has done. I’ve been purposely not thinking about it. I’m honest enough with myself to admit I’m a little jealous of her. I’d fallen for Sands, just a little, before we arrived in Taber’sa and I realized he had a wife. And then it happened a second time with Blake, though that was even worse. With him I couldn’t even confuse our connection with friendship, as I had with Sands. It was just the two of us traveling together and he was such a flirt . . . but when we arrived in Scrale to the welcoming arms of his mate, I had to admit I’d misread him. He is a flirt, but it doesn’t mean anything; it’s just his way or at least I think it is . . . his behavior recently has suggested otherwise, but I’m not going there. We’re at war, for all I know the world could be ending, and he’s still mated. So, yes, I could admit a little jealousy, even of the relationship she had with Ayden. Who doesn’t want a mate that supports you?

But I can also push aside those feelings and look at the bigger picture. The shifter king had arrived in Celune, and he wasn’t one to just let us go on our merry way. Ayden is obsessed with his rules, with honor and loyalty. If we didn’t win him to our side he wouldn’t stand back, he’d stand against us. Among the four of us, I was the only one capable of talking to him without it being about Sasha, Rossi’s lies, or their enemy. It’d been easier than I’d thought to get away from them all unnoticed. Sila had gotten annoyed with their endless arguing and started the search of the city.
