Chapter Twelve: Investigations

Daniel eyed his friend. “My extra-bedtime activities, beyond sleep and other things is nothing new. Why are you really so impatient and glum looking?”

Simon let out a sigh. “Leah is resisting the idea of taking our relationship to the next level. We are fond of each other, more than fond, we love each other, but holding hands and sweet words is as far as she will go. I want to marry her.”

Daniel truly did feel for his sandy-haired friend, having been in a similar situation with Sherree at one point. She had encouraged a certain amount of kissing; describing the relationship as them being, “Affectionate friends,” but his premature proposal of marriage had made her furious and ruined the relationship. It had taken being Condemned by Serin Gell and later being restored to humanity for her to change her mind. Nothing Daniel could have said or done would have changed her decision prior to that experience. Considering his initial failures with her and earlier with Val, he counted himself the least qualified person to give advice on successful courtship, but did have a suggestion.

“Leah is nearly four times our age, has spent about eight of those decades in Aakadon, and is definitely an old-school Accomplished. She believes Aakacarns should never marry and are to remain celibate. She tolerates the changes of traditions I have made as Maestro of the Atlantan Guild, but does not personally approve of them. Many of the Accomplisheds associated with us who were Aakadon-trained feel as she does. You are an exception, being more open to change,” he did his best to explain and then placed a hand on Simon’s shoulder. “I can see she does love you, but it could take years, perhaps decades, before she is ready for the more intimate relationship you have in mind. I have no advice how to win her over and can only suggest patience and persistence.”

Simon nodded acknowledgement and then arched an eyebrow. “Are you going to tell me what the Swirling of Events had you doing for half the night or are you going to make me discover the little details as events unfold, as you sometimes do to Samuel?”

Daniel removed his hand from the shoulder of his friend and told the chief-aid all about the new Symphonic and the events on the isle of Lilith, including the close encounter with death and then added, “You will have to fit the transformations into my schedule this time next week and on into the future. I would rather plan the trips than be transported in my dreams.”

Simon nodded understandingly. “The seeds must be planted in accordance with Silvia’s Viewing and so we really have no choice but to continue what you have started, even keeping in mind the dangers involved. You know, all of us have been trying to get an avian scout to Zeutha, but not even an albatross wants to fly so far from land. I lost a few scouts by having them follow
