Berlin, Sonntag, 13.November 13.23

Things move. Bettina says the “Nali-and-Felix-Stay-Here-Group” is getting bigger and stronger.

They have connected with other groups and have stirred up the public. Now there are reports in the papers, all in favor of Nali. After all, she is living in Germany since 1979 and has always earned her living! And Felix has been here all his life. There’s talk about a strike of the school so Felix can come back. That is something even I can do! Only Knut wrinkles his forehead and says: “If they want them out, they want them out. Bureaucracy is stronger than anything.” But he supports the group. He is taking care of Lotte so Bettina has more time to do things.

Cross fingers. In German we push the thumb between the fingers and say: “I’ll press the thumb!”

Felix says he feels as if he is living in a soap bubble. He is watching TV like he wants to replace real life. And he does all the homework I take to him. Even with pleasure I think.

Two of our teachers are involved in the liberation group. They check Felix’s homework and give him things to work on. I am the messenger boy! I make sure that nobody follows me. The good thing is I get all my Math homework done! The teacher is very content with the progress I am making.

Bettina is going to visit Felix’s mother tomorrow. And she’s going to take me! She called the jail to find out if I could go, and the guy said: “Yes, but it’s not really pretty here. Are you sure you want to burden your son with that?” And she said: “You cannot protect children by keeping them away from reality!” Boy, she got real cross!

Okay, back to your mail. I didn’t know any of this. It’s funny how Germans are described. I told Bettina about it and she said: “You know the Turkish people who got here in the sixties were also described as hard working. I suppose people who go someplace to have a new start will be hard working. Otherwise they couldn’t survive, could they?”

That’s a point.

So Australians and Germans were enemies? Ha! Not anymore! Henni and Leo make peace!

Maybe the Schmidts were “illegal”? Like Felix and his mother? Maybe that was the problem?

Bettina says she’ll look up a nursery rhyme book for Ting Tang Tellerlein.

Okay, tomorrow is the day I am going to see

Felix’s mother.

Read you!

Leo
