Whilst I was keen to argue my case with Lucus, for now, we had a more important task.

“I hate this part of the job. So much,” Rebecca muttered, her hands clenched around the wheel.

“At least it’s not the worst news.”

“It might as well be.”

We fell into silence as Rebecca drove us closer to AJ Weaver’s home, which he shared with his girlfriend, Luna Carraway. I’d spoken to her little, but she seemed like a sweet, good-hearted woman, and I hated to be taking this news to her. But then, I’d thought that AJ was a kind, decent person and yet he’d been accused of paedophilia. This whole case was messing with my head, making me doubt how well I could really tell what someone was like. If my character judgement was so messed up that I’d never noticed even a tiny sign of AJ not being who he claimed to be, what did that say about my ability to do my job?

As Rebecca pulled up outside AJ’s quiet home, I pushed my own self-doubt firmly out of my head. It was our duty right now to focus on delivering the news to Luna in the most gentle way possible.

We were climbing out of the car when the front door opened, and Luna stepped out. She was in a cream-coloured dressing gown, her feet bare and her eyes huge and scared in her face.

“What’s happened? Where is he?” she demanded, hurrying down the path towards us.

“Let’s go and sit down inside,” Rebecca coaxed, stiffening her shoulders in determination as she slipped back into her professional persona.

“Oh god.” Luna gave a low, pain-filled groan and bent forwards like she’d been kicked in the stomach. “I knew- I knew something was wrong. He was meant to be home by now. He’s meant to be home by now.”

We guided Luna gently back into the house and told her what had happened as carefully as we could. Luna stared at me, glassy-eyed with shock, as I was speaking and the look on her pallid face was unnerving. It was like looking at a doll automaton that had frozen up, stiff and broken.

But once we’d finished, the silence stretching out shakily between us, she blinked abruptly.

“He’s in the hospital?” she repeated.

I’d told her where he was several times already, but I patiently told her again. Rebecca subtly checked her phone, and I guessed that she was waiting for the family liaison officer to get in touch. We’d tried to place a call through to them in the car, but it’d gone straight to voicemail. Luna badly needed someone with her right now, and part of me resented that we couldn’t take that role.

“I need… I need to go there. The hospital. I have to see him.”

Her chair creaked as she got up suddenly, her narrow fingers clinging to the hem of her sleeves.

I patted the air with my hands. “Okay. We can do that, but we’ll drive you over there. Have you got someone who can
