Hamish stared blindly at the guest room he’d been escorted to. He hadn’t heard Darshan call his new gift as such before. He hadn’t really taken in what his husband had done in full until hearing the explanation Darshan gave to his sister.

Shaking his head, he examined his accommodations under the yellow light cast by a small array of lanterns. The furniture seemed standard to both the imperial estates they’d briefly stayed at. The bed was a mattress on a raised dais surrounded by gauzy curtains and with a headboard that had holes the size of a fist bored into it. Plush rugs littered the stone floor, a welcome addition as he tugged off his boots and burrowed his toes into the softness.

The bed faced a series of massive windows big enough for an entire horse to leap through. At least, that’ll nae be happening. Or maybe it could. It was probably best to not assume anything.

A little fiddling with the latches revealed one window was actually a door leading out to a small balcony. That would’ve been a worry, had his room not sat several stories up.

With the size of the imperial palace, he had expected there to be a guest wing. But they’d a whole other building, set within the palace grounds, but outside the imperial one. Other visiting nobility also currently used it and they had eyed Hamish with a stillness of witnessing a ghost. The rumour of his death was one he could’ve done without. Hopefully, it would fade with time and his very-much-alive presence.

Darshan had objected to them being parted during the night, at great lengths and relenting only when Hamish accepted the terms. This was to be his quarters until their second wedding. Along with setting up a contingent of Nulled Ones to guard Hamish, the Mhanek had also insisted they sleep apart. It would take a few nights before he adjusted to Darshan’s absence, but it wasn’t impossible.

He wasn’t utterly alone, either. A pair of Nulled One’s stood guard outside the only entrance, keeping him safe.

Hamish eyed the door, tapping the key to it against his lips. It was hard not to liken being locked in here to how it had been back in his quarters in Tirglas. His mother had set guards outside his door for years to keep him in line, to imprison him, night after night.

The duo outside this room remained purely for his safety, not to monitor him. They would undoubtedly follow him if he chose to leave—just as their comrades had done with Anjali and himself earlier in the day—but there would be no interference to his actions beyond keeping him alive.

He poked about the rest of the room, first investigating a door opposite the windows to find it led to a bath, with another door hiding the privy. He considered the broad tub. It had two taps, which suggested warm water on demand. Would that still be true now twilight stretched her fingers across the world?

A quick fiddle with the taps swiftly gave him a favourable answer.
