CHAPTER 11

The day turned out to be bright and sunny, but she wasn’t really aware of it. Her dark mood reflected the fitful sleep of the night before and all the questions she still had. She lived in Boston but worked exclusively in Bromfield and felt out of touch with the gossip she got on a regular basis working in the advertising business. She decided to call Mandy and ask if she could shed any light on the mystery of Harry’s recent bizarre behavior without giving too much away.

Mandy answered on the second ring. “Nice to hear from the retail maven. How does it feel to finally be running your own show?”

“It’s everything I hoped it would be, but I would appreciate a little help from my friends. When are you going to drop by for some serious retail therapy? I’m not that far from Boston, you know!”

“I know I haven’t been in touch as much as I should, but lately, I don’t know whether I’m coming or going with this new account. Frankly, I miss you like hell. Health food lunches, or any lunches, just aren’t the same without my friend who listens to all my complaints.”

“Actually, Mandy, I’m calling to ask a favor. Have you by any chance heard any rumors about Harry’s family business? I mean, are they still solvent?”

“What a funny thing to ask. As far as I know they are still rolling in money, and the account is rock solid. What’s the matter? Have you two had a lover’s quarrel?”

Leave it to my friend to get right to the heart of the matter. But I’m sure I’m doing the right thing by asking her. “No”, she said cautiously, “it’s not that. I heard somewhere that Harry may have made some bad investments, and, well, I just wanted to know if there was any truth to it.”

“The Boston rumor mill is still grinding, but no, I haven’t heard anything negative about Harry or his family. You know if I did, I’d be on the phone to you faster than a new Prada bag offering. But if you’re worried, why don’t you just as him, Ronnie. I know he would tell you the truth.”

She thought a moment then plowed ahead. “Well, for your ears only, but I’m cooling a bit. After three years with Harry, things are getting stale between us, and I’m seriously thinking of moving on.”

The silence was deafening. Finally, Mandy answered. “You really know how to drop a bombshell, don’t you? Well, if you’re serious, I have just the man for you. He’s rich, he’s handsome, he’s single, he’s—”

“Hang on, Mandy. If this guy is so great, why haven’t you grabbed him?”

“I can’t because he’s my client. And you know if Old Man Styles ever got wind of an office romance, I would be out of a job, and I love my job.”

“Fair enough. What does he do?”

“He owns his own successful business, a high tech, state-of-the-art home security company with A-Listers and celebrities for clients.
