A deep, shadowy hayloft stretched across the back half of the barn. A number of people had clambered up to find spots to nap, smooch, clap along with the music, or simply get a better view of the dance floor, strewn with hay and clogged with high-spirited cowboys and their ladies. Along one side of the lower level was a row of stalls. No longer used for calving, they were now filled with coolers and boxes of extra food and drink. In front of the stalls stretched a row of tables heaped high with steaming barbecued ribs, potato salad, baked beans, pies, cakes, spiced apple cider, coffee and soft drinks. Near the back, a butane stove was putting out plenty of welcome heat.
On the other side of the barn, the band dominated on a platform made of hay bales and plywood. Between the two sides, couples two-stepped and waltzed around the floor, hooting and laughing, feet thudding in time-honored country rhythms on the worn pine floorboards. With the women outnumbered by the men, Amy had spent little time cooling her heels as a wallflower. Sheâd gotten to know every cowboy in the county almost as well as every crack and worn spot in the floor.
A few minutes ago, sheâd declined several invitations to dance so she could take a breather. Perched on the end of a row of bales about halfway up the bleachers, she was enjoying her view of the dancefloor. She hadnât seen Beau for a while and assumed he was reacquainting himself with several of the local ladiesâpossibly up in a dark corner of the hayloft. It wasnât a particularly outlandish idea, considering how popular he seemed to be with the local women.
Unfortunately, even against her will, sheâd taken notice of him from time to time on the dance floor as one pretty girl after another took a turn around the floor in his arms. But she wasnât counting and she wasnât watching and she didnât care where he was.
âHaving fun?â
She almost shrieked with surprise, but stopped herself, wondering what was wrong with her nerves lately. Though she governed her features to remain unruffled, she couldnât quite meet his face. Instead she pretended to watch the dancers. âI donât know when Iâve had this much fun,â she said truthfully, managing the beginnings of a real smile. âThe cowboy bar canât hold a candle to this.â
He didnât speak, and her curiosity made her turn toward him. When she did, she was startled to see that his face was very close to her own. She hadnât realized her elevated position would place her in such intimate proximity to eyes that were such a pure blueunwavering and direct. Her smile faded, but she refreshed it quickly. âAndâand everybodyâs nice, too.â
âYes, they are nice.â
His lips were close. Too close. And even though his expression was serious, something in his eyes seemed far from dispassionate. âWould you like to dance?â
No! her mind cried. âIâyesâ¦â She blanched. Who had said that?
As he took
